Located in the wilder southern reaches of Mauritius, Rhumerie de Saint Aubin traces its heritage back to 1819. With a gracious plantation house – Le Domaine de Saint Aubin – surrounded by lush botanical gardens and vanilla plantations, it is a popular destination for rum-loving travellers to the island. The hills of the estate are also carpeted in waving fields of sugarcane, so little surprise that Saint Aubin is one of the island’s leading producers in crafting premium island rum from pressed sugarcane juice. That fresh juice – extracted only from sugar grown on the estate – is distilled using a small copper pot still, ensuring an extremely high quality of spirit going into barrel. For the commercial market, Saunt Aubin produces a wide-ranging portfolio of rums, from unaged white spirits to rare matured rums, aged in a range of barrels.But as one of the last Mauritian rum distilleries to join the NWW portfolio the selection from Saunt Aubin had to be something of age, and it was finally found after sampling and waiting on maturity for over several years. Rhumerie de Saint Aubin, Mauritius

Located in what some might refer to as the middle of the island, Oxenham Distillery with its small but impressive copper distillation setup, showcases savoir-faire and innovation producing rum based on both molasses and sugarcane juice. At times even experimental with local grown sugarcane varietals grown specifically for use in some of their recent rum production. Interesting times ahead for this family owned and run rum distillery.“We’ve been trying to include Oxenham from the start, but it’s been hard to select a single great cask. Being a relatively young distillery, their stocks of aged rum are very limited,” explains Alex de Ujfalussy. “Happily, after searching through all the corners of their ageing storehouse, we finally found it with this fantastic sherry single cask that we are excited to share with rum enthusiasts across the world. It’s a unique bottling that really showcases the depth and quality of Mauritian rum today. Oxenham Distillery, Mauritius

After poring over potential sites across Scotland Anthony Wills settled on Islay, where his wife’s family had laid down roots nearly a century before. Aside from the family connection, Wills knew that Islay’s cachet would help him get a foot in the door of an increasingly competitive market. And he wanted his distillery to be different; not simply follow in the footsteps of Islay’s more established players. So Kilchoman began with a simple premise: to reconnect with the island’s rich heritage of farm distilling.Islay was once home to 35 registered farm distilleries, malting barley from their own fields, with peat cut from the banks that carpet this windswept isle.
