Blended Whisky, Scotland
Delos is the second release from the “”Extinct Blends”” quartet celebrating and reimagining the different styles of Blended Scotch Whiskey of the past. Delos follows in the line of Ultramarine’s lavish seascape and takes its name from a central Mediterranean island in ancient Greek religion. Delos is inspired by Asyla, one of Compass Box’s “”disappeared”” whiskeys. The illustration derives from the meaning of the whiskey name, “”asyla”” being the plural form of “”asylum”” – a place of safety, sanctuary or retreat. The perfect hideaway, and the image Compass Box had in his mind was a secluded, sunny island. After researching the Sanctuary Islands, Delos was discovered. Considered the birthplace of the god Apollo in Greek mythology, the island of Delos has many ancient sites, including mosaics. Compass Box has reimagined Asyla’s original label lute player in mosaic form. However, in this version, it is not a lute but a lyre that she plays, the instrument classically associated with Apollo. The outline of the tiles has been broken to reflect the coasts of Delos and Greece. The visual set is designed to be meditative, beautiful and calm, like Asyla herself.Whiskeys from the Cameronbridge (Single Grain) and Glen Elgin distilleries, once present in Asyla, make an appearance in Delos. The same goes for some of the last casks of whiskey from the Imperial Distillery, which has closed. “An extinct distillery for our own extinct blend.”
