Located in the town of Rothes in the Speyside region, the Glen Grant distillery was founded in 1840. It produces a truly elegant single malt which admirably supports very long ageing. This especially mature version, aged in first-fill bourbon casks, is a brilliant illustration of this ability to age. Honeyed, fruity, rich, exotic and even roasted, it also shows a unity of tone from start to finish.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep, old gold.
Nose: Rich, concentrated. Notes of beeswax and yellow peach immediately highlight the very mature character of the nose. When aerated, dried fruits (date, fig, walnut) accentuate this sensation of fullness. Then, delicious aromas of baked apple, roasted pineapple and cinnamon emphasise the sweet side of the aromatic palette.
Palate: Clean and lively. In perfect continuity with the nose, the attack on the palate shines with its fruity (citrus, apple), chocolatey (cocoa powder) and exotic (banana, mango) tones. Wonderfully malty and roasted (coffee), the midpalate adds new spices (ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, saffron). The long finish lingers with notes of dark chocolate
Finish: Long, full-bodied. On the finish, honeyed flavours (acacia, lavender) blend elegantly with ripe fruit (yellow plum, mango) and heady flowers (iris, lily). The aftertaste invites us to savour an absolutely delicious vanilla custard. Evoking an oxidative wine, the empty glass gives off scents of dried fruit (apricot, almond) and spices (ginger, pepper).
