Single Malt Whisky, Japan/Hokkaido
The Homakai River cuts through the peat layers of the wetlands and is full of rich nutrients. The water used to brew Akkeshi whisky is so clear that you can through the schools of returning salmon. Leave the cosy comfort of winter behind and prepare to shine in the summer sun with Akkeshi Taisetsu.
Taisetsu Single Malt, or « Heavy Snow », is the tenth whisky in the «24 seasons series» from the Japanese distillery Akkeshi located in northern Japan.
“Taisetsu” is the season during which the plains as well as the mountains become covered in a blanket of snow and the days become shorter. The fruits of nandina (heavenly bamboo) turn red, the people start to catch yellowtail fish, and the bears start to hibernate. Trees have shed all their leaves, and soon, the heavy winter chill is upon us.
TASTING NOTES
Nose : Like a winter night, bright citrus fruits come forth, such as Hassaku orange, mandarine and orange. Warm yourself with the smooth aromas of Darjeeling tea mixed with honey and brown sugar, as well as some violet flowers.
Appearance : Or Champagne
Palate : Sweet and sour-like flavours of oranges and mandarine, which then develop into more peaty notes of soya sauce, herbs and butter bread, typical of the Akkeshi style.
Overall : White pepper, lime zest, ripe mandarin and some noble spice conclude the palate in a long and agreeable finish.
