Single Malt Whisky, Scotland/Speyside
In a revival of tradition, the owners of the Benromach distillery, Gordon & MacPhail, produce an ‘old style’ single malt from lightly peated barley (12 ppm), a common practice on Speyside until the 1960s. The most peaty versions, known as ‘peat smoke’, have a phenol content of 67 ppm. A perfect illustration of the Benromach style, this version is not only smoky but also remarkably salty and iodised. Its aromatic palette is freshly herbaceous, with an impressively long mineral, medicinal and spicy streak.
