Malted Barley peated in Scotland and then brought over to Boulder, Colorado for Scotsman, Alastair Brogan to double distil in his Forsyth Pot Still. This peated American single malt aged in virgin American white oak barrels calls for a very interesting unpack!
No better Boulder bottling to do this with than this single barrel bottled at barrel proof, a whopping 126.7 proof (63.35% ABV). The heavy char of the virgin American oak barrel against the big peat of this single malt is a marriage that truly works, in particular with this barrel that has found the balance of both worlds.
A barrel that is particularly close to Navigate World Whisky’s heart. One which we certainly took our time with, well worth it!
Tasting Notes
Colour: Mahogany.
Nose: Sweet and tangy Ghost Pops, biltong flakes, white pepper, and balsamic vinegar. There is a lot going on here, but one has to say the overall profile can best be summarised as smoky brisket with burnt barbecue sauce. Very buttery too alongside a classical Boulder peated single malt nose. Allowed to settle some fruity notes come forward, poached pears and stewed apples.
Palate: The liquid is thick and chewy, the charred cask and all its caramelised flavours are very present. Rich-rich-rich. Bon fires and smouldering beechwood make for some very recognisable classical Islay notes (now claimed by Peated American single malt). Later, a hearty meaty beef stew with a depth of flavour that makes one want to dig deeper and revisit with another sip.
Finish:Long and warming peat. Smoked cured meats. Let’s leave it there, it’s time for a moment.
