SELECT RESERVE rums represent a special selection, tasted and chosen by Robert Greaves himself, of Mhoba’s most exceptional pot distillations crafted from their own wild-fermented estate-grown sugarcane juice. About as single estate as a rum distillery can get, there is also very little in the distillery that mechanical engineer Robert has not built himself including the sugarcane press, pot stills, his numerous copper spirit thiefs and even the racking in the warehouse.
Bourbon casks are one of two favoured cask types for maturing rum at the Mhoba distillery. Bourbon Cask Aged Rum is a small batch core range with its full maturation exclusively in ex-Bourbon casks, aged for at least 24 months in the hot Lowveld climate, at the Mhoba distillery.
A bottling specifically developed for the South African market in partnership with Navigate World Whisky.
Tasting Notes
Nose: The opening of a Tex milk chocolate bar creates instant nostalgia. Smouldering burnt sugarcane, a little like the aroma coming off the Mhoba bamboo labels themselves. Rich pudding, pecan nut pie (one with lots of syrup) and a slightly funky wild sugarcane juice character with subtle notes of strawberry cheesecake. Strawberry coulis. A little dusty, that’s the bourbon casks speaking and of course, the Mhoba warehouse.
Palate: Rather thick and slightly syrupy but also very easy. Freshly baked plain hot scones with a thin spread of strawberry jam.
Finish: Warming and full, rather outspoken for 48%. Spicy tobacco reveals itself which is now also identifiable on the nose.
Very satisfying this Mhoba can be quaffed in a tumbler!
