SELECT RESERVE rums represent a special selection, tasted and chosen by Robert Greaves himself, of Mhoba’s most exceptional pot distillations crafted from their own wild-fermented estate-grown sugarcane juice. About as single estate as a rum distillery can get, there is also very little in the distillery that mechanical engineer Robert has not built himself including the sugarcane press, pot stills, his numerous copper spirit thiefs and even the racking in the warehouse.
RSAWC – Refurbished South African Wine Cask is one of two favoured cask types for maturing rum at the Mhoba distillery. It is a selection of rums chosen for having a rich character of toasted French oak, married with ripe red fruit and a heavy South African wine influence. These rums age in the hot climate at the distillery in barrels which previously held distinguished, single estate, Cape wine, most recently from the Franschhoek wine valley.
In partnership with Navigate World Whisky, RSAWC despite being small batch is a core range bottling specifically developed for South Africa.
Tasting Notes
Nose: The first nose is intriguing but it’s not long before one recognises the burst of red fruits that come racing to the forefront. It’s local South African red wine pushing through with a backing of smouldering sugarcane and toasted French oak.
Palate: Rhubarb tart, burnt sugar, baked chocolate pudding and brandy snaps, or perhaps it’s Nutti crust biscuits (remember those?).
Finish: A deeper finish than the Bourbon cask, less sweet and more honeycomb. Light red fruits, a merlot with ripe banana. It’s Mhoba!
