For the inaugural bottling of PURE, Navigate World Whisky travelled to the Mhoba rum distillery in Malelane to put together the very best cuts possible from the season’s produce. Timing is everything and it just so happened that this was the first full year of distillation where the distillery had completed an entire season of produce using 100% wild fermentation.
Tasting at distillate strength (70-80% ABV) in 12-15 litre lots, the most exemplary cuts from over 1000 representative litres were put aside and later assembled together into what became just 300 litres of perhaps the finest Mhoba white medley to date. Powerful and brimming with personality, 225 litres were immediately used for aging with just 75 litres remaining in its true white rum form, now bottled for PURE.
A key element of Mhoba’s distinctiveness lies in its dedication to pot still craftsmanship. 500-litre pot stills, designed and built identically by Robert Greaves, showcase individual character.
Following a meticulous farm-to-bottle approach, each rum batch undergoes careful cuts and tastings done by Greaves himself, and in this case with the assistance of Navigate World Whisky.
